We paid 4,000 THB for a private family half day tour (2 adu ll ts, 2 small kids) during the low season, which is more or less in line with what other tour companies offer—so overall, the pricing seemed fair at the time of booking. However, there were some disappointing aspects of the experience. We did not receive the Karen clothing experience or visit the waterfall as was originally promised during the call. Additionally, we chose to skip the complimentary lunch and return to the city earlier, partly due to the confusion about the schedule. I later tried to discuss a partial refund or discount due to the missed activities and the unused lunch, but unfortunately, the response from the tour manager was very unprofessional. He raised his voice and insisted it was not his problem that we skipped lunch—completely ignoring the fact that the Karen dress experience and waterfall visit were never provided. We would have loved to visit the waterfall and were surprised when we were driven back to the city without any explanation. This experience highlighted the need for much clearer communication from the company, both in setting expectations and in handling customer concerns. The day started nice and early with a personal pickup at my hotel. I hopped into a car with a young Dutch family who were doing a half day trip to see the elephants whereas I had a full day planned. Taksin the owner operator was so pleasant, informative and courteous. We stopped at a market and got some breakfast and coffee. Everyone had such a great time at the sanctuary feeding, walking and bathing with the elephants. We had a nice lunch with locals and then went on a tour of doi inthanon Park, to the king and queens pagodas, waterfalls, a hill tribe village to see local life and opportunity to purchase hand made goods in support of the village, hikes in the jungle with a guide to learn about the area, coffee, rice and so on. Here we fed, swam and washed the elephants, learning more about the lives of these incredible animals. We then began a 3hr treck into the jungle with stunning views to reach our cabin for the night. Along the way we swam in waterfalls and learnt more about the different creatures from our amazing tour guide. Once at the hostel we were served a lovely meal and spent the evening chatting with fellow tour members and having a few cold beers. The next morning we trecked back for 1.5hr stopping regularly to take in the views. Finally, we ended the tour bamboo rafting which was an incredible experience and made for some funny memories. Overall the tour was incredible and I would highly recommend it to anybody visiting Chiang Mai.Posted onVerified Magic! Booking a tour of an elephant sanctuary was at the top of my list, but I was so worried after hearing about the prevalence of unethical practices, so I asked the person who booked the tour for us some questions before going. Taksin, the guide, not only answered my questions, but during the tour, he explained the history of how elephants were used for work and why they don't do that anymore. There were 4 elephants during our visit and they were treated very well throughout the experience. If any of them wanted to take longer munching on leaves, they had the time:) The elephants were incentivized by food treats and none of the staff ever spoke harshly or had to coerce them. The elephants seemed genuinely content and I could see the effort that goes into their care. Riding is NEVER allowed. The waterfall was beautiful and we loved the bamboo raft experience. Taksin was a fun and outgoing tour guide and we really enjoyed our time with him! He took pictures of us throughout the day and shared them with us which was above and beyond. I highly recommend helping support this local community and their beautiful elephants!
